Gas springs are the right call here and it is worth knowing why. A windshield on a friction hinge either flops down over the hood on a hard bump or needs enough clamping drag that you have to fight it with both hands. The material: double-sided hard coat

The words that matter in there are double-sided. Plain polycarbonate is tough but soft — it hazes from the inside out as sleeves, gloves and shop rags polish a cloudy film into it, and from the outside in as sand and branches do the same. A coating on one face only solves half the problem. Coating both is the difference between a shield that still reads clearly into its third season and one you squint through by the end of the first.
Yellowing is the other half. A PC panel left in the sun without UV protection goes amber and then goes brittle, and a brittle windshield does not bend away from a branch — it cracks. The anti-UV coating is what keeps the panel doing its actual job, which is bending rather than breaking.
What it keeps out
Kemimoto says the shield provides strong protection while driving, effectively blocking cold winds, dust, rain, snow, and flying debris on any terrain. They also list anti-vibration and noise reduction among the benefits.
The noise claim is the one owners underrate. Most of the racket in an open Pioneer cab at speed is not the engine, it is wind turbulence over the cage and around the seat backs. Putting a solid panel in front of the occupants changes the airflow across the whole cab, and the result is a machine you can hold a conversation in. Dust is the other quiet win — it is what ruins phones, radios and lunch, and it does not care how water-resistant your jacket is.
