The Defender bed is the reason a lot of people buy a Defender, and it is also the reason a lot of people stop leaving anything in it. An open bed is a dust collector in the summer, a bathtub in the fall and an open invitation at a trailhead or a job site. Most owners end up solving it badly: a ratchet strap over a tarp, a tote that slides, or hauling the expensive stuff back and forth to the truck every time they park. The Moto Alliance HIGHLANDS Cargo UTV Rear Bed Cover for the Can-Am Defender is the permanent version of that fix, and it runs $729.99.
What it is
This is a molded hard lid for the full cargo bed, not a soft cover. Moto Alliance describes it as a sleek design with an OEM finish, custom fit to the lines of the Defender, with weatherproof seals and lockable latches so your gear is dry, dust-free and secure when you reach your destination. The claim worth noting in that sentence is "custom fit": a cover molded for one machine's bed is what makes the seals and the latches work at all, which is exactly what a universal cover cannot do.
What Moto Alliance lists
- Rugged and durable at 70 lbs
- Weatherproof and dust proof, with a custom OEM fit that secures the entire cargo bed
- Enough clearance for gas cans, coolers, helmets, tools and other off-road clothing and equipment
- Lockable for security
- Molded from impact-resistant, low-density polyethylene to withstand any terrain
- Installs and removes in minutes
Two of those deserve a second read. The 70-pound figure is honest and it cuts both ways — this is a substantial piece of molded plastic, which is why it seals and why it takes abuse, and it is also 70 pounds you are adding behind the rear axle and 70 pounds you will be lifting if you take it off. Moto Alliance says it installs and removes in minutes, which is true of the hardware, but plan on a second set of hands for the lifting.
The other is the clearance note. Gas cans, coolers and helmets are tall items, and a bed cover that only clears a flat load is close to useless on a hunting or work machine. That Moto Alliance calls those three out by name is the most practical spec on the list.
Low-density polyethylene is the right material choice for this job rather than a cost-cutting one. It is what makes the cover flex and come back instead of cracking when a branch rakes it or a tool box shifts into it in the cold — and unlike a painted metal lid, a scuff does not turn into a rust line.
Fitment — read every line
Moto Alliance publishes the fitment as:
- 2015-2026 Can-Am Defender
- 2026+ Can-Am Defender HD11: fits with the OEM snorkel kit
- Will not fit the 6x6 Defender
- Will not fit 2026 Defenders with extended cargo beds
This is a case where the exclusions matter more than the inclusions. A 6x6 is out entirely. A 2026 machine with the extended bed is out. And if you are on a 2026-or-newer HD11, the note about the OEM snorkel kit is specific enough that it is worth matching against your own machine before you order. The listing's year range also appears as 2016-2026 in the product title and 2015-2026 in the fitment text, so if you are on the earliest or the latest end of that window, confirm on the product page rather than guessing.
Who it is for
If your Defender is a work or hunting machine that gets parked places you do not control — a job site, a camp, a trailhead, a shared barn — the lock is most of the value, and the weather seal is the rest. If the machine lives in a closed shop and only hauls firewood across your own property, a bed liner and a tarp are honest answers and a lot cheaper. The one group this is clearly not for is anyone who needs to tip or dump the bed regularly, or who hauls tall irregular loads like fence posts and ladders — a hard lid means going back to the open bed every time, and at 70 pounds that stops being casual.
